Gen FX in 2026: Where Generative AI Is Already Inside VFX Pipelines

In July 2025, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos told investors that a building-collapse sequence in the Argentine series The Eternaut was completed 10 times faster using generative AI than with traditional VFX workflows. Netflix’s effects studio Scanline worked with the show’s creative team on it. It was the first confirmed use of generative AI in a Netflix original, and it changed the conversation. Gen FX is now a working part of the pipeline.

Where generative AI fits in VFX

Previs and pitching: moving visuals of a scene before production, so directors, brands and financiers can see the idea.

Environment and set extension: extending a location, adding atmosphere or building a world around footage you already have.

Cleanup and repair: removing unwanted elements and fixing backgrounds in post.

Stylised sequences: dreams, memories and fantasy moments with a distinctive look.

Final-pixel shots: shots generated to full quality that sit directly in the finished film.

How we run a hard shot: previs first

Big sequences like destruction, explosions or sweeping drone moves are expensive to get wrong. So we start in 3D. We block the shot in Blender, which lets the director approve the camera move, timing and framing. Only then do we generate the final imagery, following that locked layout. Because the camera and action are already decided, we need far fewer generation passes. That also lets us offer a fixed cost with a set number of iterations.

Work that has to stay private

Some projects cannot go to outside tools. For those, we run a pipeline on our own hardware, with no data leaving the studio, and we keep the final pixel in-house too.

Two ways to work with us

Hybrid solutions, where AI shots are blended with footage you already have. And previs-to-final-pixel, where a shot goes from a rough 3D layout to finished imagery.

How to brief a Gen FX shot

Tell us the story purpose of the shot. Share reference images for light, location and mood. Say what is fixed, such as camera move, actor position and duration. List the delivery format and resolution. And show how the shot sits in the edit, with the shots before and after it.
